This summer the Institute for Liberal Studies will be hosting two Freedom Week seminars – one at McGill University in Montreal, the other at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver.

These five-day seminars are designed for students who are interested in learning about classical liberal ideas. They are open to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates, in all fields. Our faculty at this year’s seminars will include Professors Jacob Levy (McGill), Peter Jaworski (Georgetown), Moin Yahya (Alberta), Michael Munger (Duke), and more!

Freedom Week seminars are offered free of charge, and room and board will be provided for all accepted students. Participants will be selected through a competitive application process. All applications must be submitted by April 15.

Last year we had the pleasure of hosting 46 students from 29 schools across Canada and around the world. This year we will be accepting up to 100 students between the two seminars.

The Institute for Liberal Studies in a non-partisan, educational non-profit dedicated to exploring issues related to political and economic freedom - with a particular emphasis on programs for students across Canada. To learn more, please visit www.liberalstudies.ca.

Student Volunteer Opportunities at the Gravenhurst Public Library

A volunteer opportunity that may interest you, below.

There is an opportunity for students in the B.Ed program to volunteer with children at two of Gravenhurt's Public Library summer events. These events are public community building projects that aim to be accessible to everyone.

The first is a Princess Meet and Greet.
We are looking for six students in the BEd program who would be interested in acting as the Disney Princesses Merida, Cinderella, Anna, Elsa, Belle and Jasmine.
The event is taking place on August 12th 2016 from 2:30 to 4:30 pm, the volunteers would need to be at the library from approximately 11:30 am to about 5 pm. They will be provided with lunch and will have the opportunity to meet and chat with children and parents and run activities.

The second event is our end of the Summer Carnival at the Gravenhurst Opera House. We are looking for three or four students to run booths, welcome guests and hand out prizes. The carnival is taking place on August 26th 2016 from 1-3 pm.
Student volunteers would be required to be arrive at 12:30 pm to help set up as well as to stay afterword to help take down the booths.

Each student who volunteers will receive valuable experience working with children in the community and will be given a letter of reference for their time.

If you are interested in either of these volunteer opportunities, please email Jennifer Whipp at jenniferwhipp2@gmail.com.

Chair's Video Message

Hello everyone, I hope you're having a great weekend! This week's video can be found here: https://youtu.be/91lBsXo6FUg

I talk about additional qualification courses. Here's a link to Lakehead's Professional Development in Education department's page about these courses: https://www.lakeheadu.ca/academics/departments/education/pd/about-aq-courses

I also re-address questions from first year students about why the composition of their cohorts will change next year, as this continues to be a concern for some teacher candidates. Remember that if you wish to carpool with someone, use the same procedure as you did last year and respond to the message about carpool requests when you receive it in the spring.

For more information about Bill 18, the revised Health and Safety legislation, please see this information from the Ontario Public Health and Safety Association: https://www.pshsa.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/PSHSA-Fast-Facts-Bill-18-Stronger-Workplaces-for-a-Stronger-Economy-Act-2014.pdf

For more information about police record checks, please see this information sheet from the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner/Ontario: https://www.ipc.on.ca/images/resources/up-1policebkg.pdf

I intended to share some heartening information with you and then forgot what it was. It's the Ontario College of Teacher's Transition to Teaching report. There's good news about the number of teaching jobs expected to become available in the next few years. Here's a link to the report: http://www.oct.ca/-/media/PDF/Transition%20to%20Teaching%202015/EN/2015_T2T_main_report_web_en.pdf

If you don't have time to view the video, please ask your colleagues about it. Some of your instructors are regular viewers too!

Have a terrific week!
