Attention All 1 Year B.Ed and Year 2 B.Ed students:

This is a reminder of the compulsory off-site Professional Development Workshop held at Geneva Park Convention Center on Wednesday January 10, 2018.

ALL 1 Year B.Ed and Year 2 B.Ed students are required to be in attendance.

ALL B.Ed Professional Program EDUC courses regularly scheduled for Wednesday January 10th, 2018 will be cancelled, and are to be made up on: Monday March 19th, 2018.

Possible Exception(s):
Please be sure to check with any of your instructors who have a 2:30pm (or later) class scheduled on that day.... as they may wish to hold class on January 10th, 2018 - to avoid having to schedule a mandatory make up day in March 2018.

A Few Things To Remember About January 10, 2018:

Registration Sign In For All Students:
You must sign in at the registration desk in the lobby of the Centennial Centre when you arrive, where you will be given your program materials. The registration desk will be open from 8:30 to 9:00 am.

Registration TIPS:
  • If you received an online confirmation of the workshops you successfully registered for, - PLEASE PRINT IT AND BRING IT WITH YOU.
  • For those who did not complete the online registration by the communicated deadline, you must register manually for your workshops - please plan to be there by no later than 8:15am to manually register from the workshops that are still available

What To Expect Following Mandatory Registration:
The program will commence promptly at 9:00 am in the Auditorium. Please refer to the Building Futures website (www.ontario.ca/buildingfutures) for a copy of the agenda and further information about the day.

The day's events will be wrapped up by 12:45-1:00pm.

Request Of Each Participant:
Since the Ministry of Education is making every effort to organize greener events, your cooperation is greatly appreciated. We will not be providing paper handouts of the workshop presentations; instead, we ask you to bring your own pen and paper for taking notes.
We also encourage you to bring your own beverage container (travel mug) to cut down on waste.

Parking at YMCA Geneva Park:
I thought it would be worthwhile to provide you with parking instructions since I'm not sure how well everyone knows the Geneva Park YMCA centre:
  • When you come into Geneva Park you will see the registration building (Centennial Centre) on your left.
  • Keep driving past it while staying to your right.
  • You will drive right into the main parking lot which is first come, first serve. A parking pass is not required.

Hope you enjoy the day.

REMINDER - Importance of Securing NEW PRC/VSS Documentation for your January 2018 return

Good Morning Everyone,

This is a reminder that every B.Ed student will be required to secure NEW PRC/VSS documentation for their March/April 2018 placement.
With planned changes in school boards between placement 1 and placement 2 and last minute switches in boards because of limited placement availability, the Faculty of Education is requesting that all students in the program, arrange to secure new documentation for their return to classes on January 8th, 2018.

This is in effort to ensure that all students have valid documentation for placement in the New Year, regardless of what board they are completing the winter term placement in.
We have attached the generic letter to be used for any OPP or local police service location. Please print this letter and take it with you when you visit the detachment, to start the process.

Similarly, any student living in the GTA and planning to go to Toronto Police Services, please use the attached application form (must print on legal size paper).

If you require clarification on the very specific Toronto Police Service process, please consult my previous communications on the subject.

REMEMBER:It is your responsibility to understand what your specific school board requires, with respect to PRC/VSS documentation submission.
Thank you and see you in the new year.

Hip Hop Event in February, Need Your Opinion!

**Forwarding on behalf of the ESTAO Team**

Hello Students,

The Education Student Teachers’ Association of Orillia (ESTAO) is currently in the process of organizing an event called “Engaging Youth with Hip Hop.” This event will involve several speakers/presenters who are are breakdancers, spoken word poets, MCs, etc. We will be inviting student teachers and social workers to develop a passion for breakdancing, poetry slams, and performance art. We hope to inspire you to include these ideas into your own professional practices when working with youth. We are also working in partnership with the Aboriginal Mentorship Program, the Faculty of Education and the Lakehead Association of Student Social Workers to facilitate this event.

If you are interested in attending this event (most likely to be held on February 7, 2018) please complete this quick survey (4 questions!) to express your interest. This will help us in determining the space requirements and other logistical information.

We appreciate your time and participation,

Year 2 BEd Students Only - Interested in a Remote Placement (Placement #4) - March/April 2018

Remote Teaching Opportunities

Teacher Candidates (TCs) in YEAR 2 are eligible to request a remote teaching placement for March/April, 2018.

Prior to being granted permission to enter into the remote placement, TCs will be required to submit summative teaching assessments to provide evidence of successful completion of the first three placements (two-year program).

Please Note:

TCs who selected any of our partner boards may already be committed to their placement(s) in that board and may not be able switch at this time.

Remote placements are rewarding but also challenging.

It is essential that TCs be solid in their practices and understandings of teaching/learning. School attendance is an issue in each of these communities. Instances of addiction and substance abuse are fairly common in most areas.

The Northern Practicum Video

(produced by Teach for Canada) provides compelling testimonies from recent graduates regarding their experiences and the value of remote teaching placements:

Self-Funded Remote Placements

Eligible TCs, from Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses, have equal access to several self-funded remote placement opportunities.

Self-funded remote placement opportunities include Armstrong (room for 4 TCs), Red Lake, Pickle Lake, Sioux Lookout, Moosonee and more.

  • Any TC expressing interest in one of these placements will receive a $250 stipend from LU to offset travel costs.
  • The TC is responsible for all expenses (transportation, accommodations and daily living).
If you are interested in a self-funded remote placement, please contact Catherine Hannon asap.

Eligible TCs, from Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses, also have equal access to 15 highly subsidized remote placement opportunities including

  • Project Journey (Pikangikum - Eenchokay Birchstick School; 6 TCs) and;
  • Project Canada (Sandy Lake – Fly-in, 4 TCS / Grassy Narrows – Drive-in, 4 TCs; and, Fort Hope – Fly-in, 2 TCs)
A goal of both Projects (Journey and Canada), from a community perspective, is to recruit and retain effective teachers for permanent positions.

TCs are under no obligation to accept offers, though these are likely to be made. This is a great opportunity to see if teaching in a remote community is a ‘good fit’ for you.

Expression of interest for any of the subsidized placements is by application to your Professional Experiences Coordinator Catherine Hannon - channon@lakeheadu.ca) cc’d to Julie Howell - (jhowell@lakeheadu.ca.)

Project Journey

Is a partnership between LU, the OPP, and the community of Pikangikum.

Last year, six TCs completed a 5-week placement in Pikangikum.

  • Three accepted permanent contracts and are now teaching in the community.
  • TCs receive free transportation to/from Pikangikum, Safe Talk training (suicide prevention), and accommodations, along with a $100 weekly food stipend from the OPP for running Saturday activities (9 am to 4 pm).
  • TCs also receive a $250 stipend from LU to support higher food expenses.
  • TCs will be responsible for any additional daily living expenses.

This initiative aims to reduce suicide and violence rates within the community.

We hope to send 6 TCs in March/April 2018.

A Thunder Bay faculty advisor and professional experiences coordinator will make one site visit, during placement, to provide support to TCs and ATs.

How to Express Your Interest For Project Journey:

Interested TCs must complete and submit the attached Project Journey proposal to Catherine Hannon - (channon@lakeheadu.ca) cc’d to Julie Howell - (jhowell@lakeheadu.ca.)

(Along with any additional documentation specified in the application form), by Wednesday, October 11, in order to be considered.

Project Canada

Is a pilot project funded by The Rideau Hall Foundation. Rideau Hall will provide free transportation and accommodations to TCs, along with Safe Talk Training.

  • TCs also receive a $250 stipend from LU to support higher food expenses.
  • There is no commitment to lead activities on weekends, and therefore, no additional weekly activity stipend.
  • TCs will be responsible for any additional daily living expenses.
  • Up to ten TCs will be offered support to enter into remote placements in any of the following three locations: Sandy Lake (4 spaces), Grassy Narrows (4 spaces) or Fort Hope (2 spaces) for the March/April 2018 placement.

A Thunder Bay faculty advisor will make one site visit, during placement, to provide support to TCs and ATs.

How to Express Your Interest For Project Canada:

Interested TCs must complete and submit the attached Project Canada proposal to (Catherine Hannon - channon@lakeheadu.ca) cc’d to Julie Howell - (jhowell@lakeheadu.ca.)

(Along with any additional documentation specified in the application form), by Wednesday, October 11, in order to be considered.
