Statement from the Education Student Teachers’ Association of Orillia regarding the March 16, 2021 attack in Atlanta, Georgia:
ESTA-O condemns all forms of racially motivated and misogynist violence. We are outraged and heartbroken by the murder of 8 individuals, many of whom were women of Asian descent. These women were mothers, daughters, sisters, friends and neighbours. Their names were: Soon Chung Park, Hyun Jung Grant, Suncha Kim, Young Ae Yue, Daoyou Feng, Xiaojie Tan, Delaina Ashley Yaun and Paul Andre Michels. More news is coming out each day about the victims. We learned that Hyun Jung Grant (maiden name: Kim), who was a single mom, leaves behind two young boys, who now have to survive by themselves. We also learned that Mr. Elcias Hernandez-Ortiz was injured during the attack and is recovering in the hospital.
We are deeply disturbed by the increase in anti-Asian discrimination, hate and violence in Canada. We recognize that there is ongoing trauma, anger and grief associated with anti-Asian assaults. We stand in solidarity with organizations, initiatives and campaigns that advocate for justice for Asians of all intersectionalities. We encourage you to address any microaggressions, violent acts and racial slurs while you are on placement, in your school, in your Lakehead classes, and in your hometowns. #StopAsianHate
We encourage anyone affected by these incidents to reach out for support during this time.
