Seeking Education students to
help facilitate youth climate action planning sessions!
Looking for 10 – 15 BEd or MEd
students (P/J or I/S) to facilitate 1 hour action-planning sessions (training
provided) from 1:50 to 2:50 on May 26th on University Ave campus.
Lakehead is hosting the Sustainable Youth Summit on May 26th at the Orillia University Ave campus. The event is a youth-led event and is organized by the Sustainable Orillia Youth Council with support from Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning and Dr. Ellen Field from the Faculty of Education. This awesome day is part of a SSHRC Connections grant that is exploring youth-adult ally partnerships for climate action.
On the day there will be 200 high school students from SCDSB schools attending some exciting workshops that the organizing team have put together (see attachment). This schedule was put together by high school students – FYI! From 1:50 to 2:50 pm, the 200 secondary students will be organized into ten groups where they will then go through a climate action planning session that has been developed by the Youth Climate Lab, a Canadian non-profit that specializes in youth climate leadership and engagement. The action-planning process has been developed and if you are keen, then you will facilitate this process with a group of students (some groups are 10 and some are 25).
The Youth Climate Lab is offering two training sessions for Lakehead Education students to learn about the climate action planning process: Monday, May 16th @ 3:30 and Thursday, May 19th @ 7pm. Ellen Field will also be there to help answer any questions.
For your volunteer participation:
-
Your service will be
acknowledged on your transcript as part of your Co-Curricular Record (i.e. your
transcript will acknowledge your volunteer service to a Climate Leadership
event).
- - You can attend the keynotes and check out workshops occurring on the day.
- - Get experience facilitating highly motivated secondary students.
- - Be inspired by change-making youth.
- - Parking pass for the day.
Other important information:
- You
do not need to attend the whole day in order to contribute your time. If you
can only join to facilitate in the afternoon, then we will ask that you arrive
at University Ave no later than 1pm and check in at the conference desk.
- Lakehead
is still following the mask mandate so it is expected that you will wear a
mask.
Next steps:
- Write
an email to Ellen Field (efield@lakeheadu.ca) expressing your interest and
indicating which training session you can attend (Monday, May 16th @
3:30 or Thursday, May 19th @ 7pm).
