Preparing For Your Math Competency Exam - Saturday Sept 7th, 2019

Good Morning Everyone,

The Faculty of Education thought it might be of benefit to circulate a number of practice math tests (and their answer keys) so each of you can use these resources (if you wish) to prepare for the upcoming sitting of the compulsory Math Competency Exam, on Saturday September 7th,  2019.

Please see the original email Julie Howell sent on Monday, May 6, 2019 for the practice tests and answer keys.

Specific details about Exam Day including your writing location assignment will be communicated to each of you, approximately 2 weeks prior to the exam sitting.

Here Are Some Other Great Resources To Help You Prepare For September 7th, 2019:

CLIPS – Interactive Online Learning
This is particularly good for learning about fractions.
http://www.oame.on.ca/clips/index.html or Google “MathCLIPS”

Gap Closing  - Online materials for Grade 6 content
Google “Gap Closing – EduGAINS” OR, go to: http://www.edugains.ca/newsite/math/gap_closing.html

Why Do B.Ed Professional Program Students Have To Complete This Exam?

A mathematics content exam is part of the compulsory Primary/Junior Mathematics Methods course in the Professional Year. The pass level is set at 75%. This exam ensures that all prospective teachers understand basic mathematical concepts at the Grade 6/7 level. Som students are working well beyond this level and pass this exam with ease.

Some Primary/Junior students however, find the exam a challenge. If you think that you are in the latter category, visit the course website to take the sample exam. If you have difficulties with the sample exam there are further suggestions on the website at:  http://flash.lakeheadu.ca/~ed4050/Content_Exam/content_exam.htm

Students must pass the exam in order to complete their degree. The mathematics methods course (EDUC 4050 or EDUC 4033) is designed to teach instructional methods rather than review this elementary mathematics content knowledge. It is assumed that students will enter the B.Ed Professional program with an adequate level of mathematical knowledge. Therefore, the onus is on the student to undertake his or her own study in this area should it be required.

The exam will take place Saturday, September 7th, 2019 from 10:00am - 12:00 noon.
Please mark your calendars as there are no alternate sittings.

Students who choose to not show up for any scheduled sitting of the math exam, will have this opportunity counted as a failed attempt to satisfy this program requirement.

Students who fail or miss the exam will have their next opportunity Thursday March 19, 2020 from 10:00am - 12:00 noon.

Details about mock exam opportunities, brush up sessions and all other math supports we make available to you, will be communicated to all B.Ed students, once details are finalized.
