Message from Wellness Centre and the Orillia After Hours Medical Clinic - TB Skin Tests

Mantoux /Tuberculin (TB)Testing

Please note that effective immediately the Orillia After Hours Medical Clinic will not be performing TB skin tests. This change in services offered at the clinic will allow attending physicians more time to treat patients seeking medical care for illness.

Students requiring this test are encouraged to request the test from their Primary Care Providers or visit a walk in clinic in Barrie.

Important Update Regarding Securing Your PRC/VSS with MHA for Fall 2014

Update #1:
NEW requirement - Mental Health Check (to be included in your PRC/VSS search)

From our website:

A teacher candidate who obtains a PRC/VSS from a police jurisdiction in the province must ensure that the document confirms that the Vulnerable Sector's database (Pardoned Sex Offender database) has been searched and cleared.  Also ensure that your police service includes a check under the Mental Health Act (MHA).

Recently, two of our largest partnership boards, the Toronto District School Board and the York Region District School Board, have notified us that they now require the police/vulnerable sector check to also include the Mental Health Act as part of the check.  Many police services already do include this MHA in the check (ie: York Police), but others may not unless specifically requested. Be sure to ask when you go to your police detachment location.

We recommend that all teacher candidates, regardless of which partnership board is selected for placement, ensure that their police service include the MHA check.  This is in the event that other boards change their policy and require the MHA check and to ensure that you have the correct documentation  for September 2nd, 2014.

Update #2:
CHANGE to instruction to submit your obtained documents (PRC/VSS with MHA and 1 Step TB Skin test results).

From our website:
OR

Originally, we had requested that all B.Ed students arrange to supply the Education Administration Office with a photocopy of all of their PRC/VSS with MHA and 1 Step TB Skin Tests results.

THIS HAS CHANGED EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.

The above documentation (PRC/VSS with MHA and 1 Step TB Skin Tests results) must be received in separate sealed envelopes by your Faculty Advisor (and course instructor) for EDUC 4499, on the first day of class.  Failure to comply may result in the withdrawal of an Offer of Admission.

Change to VSS Requirements for Students Wishing to Complete 1 or Both Placements in YRDSB

The Faculty of Education at Lakehead University just received this important update from York Region District School Board, regarding their PRC/VSS documentation requirements in order for any student teacher to complete practice teaching placements within their school board.

Notice Received From YRDSB:

Please ensure that your student teacher candidates are aware of the recent change with regards to our VSS requirements .

York Region District School Board  now requires the police record/VSS check to include a search completed under the Mental Health Act.

For Teacher Candidates (B.Ed Students) residing in York Region:
This does not have to be requested as it is included in the VSS check conducted by York Regional Police.

For Teacher Candidates (B.Ed Students) who reside outside of York Region:
When you visit your hometown detachment to start the PRC/VSS documentation, you must be sure to notify your local police service that your VSS search must include a search under the Mental Health Act,  to ensure you have satisfied YRDSB's documentation requirements to enter one of their schools, for your practice teaching.
