Queen's Conference on Education

Dear Lakehead Students,

My name is Emma Willoughby and I am a third year student at Queen’s University and the Conference Chair for the 2022 Queen’s Conference on Education.  We, the QCE 2022 team, would like to cordially invite you to our conference! Since its inception 21 years ago, QCE has evolved into an annual event dedicated to providing inspiration, practical, and enriched opportunities for undergraduate students interested in the field of teaching to professionally develop their skills as educators.

This year, QCE is proud to present the theme of “Evolving and Adapting  as a Global Learning Community.” As educators, we are committed to the role of life-long learners, in order to best-equip our students to grow and enact change. With a rapidly evolving society and the ongoing pandemic, it is imperative that educators are able to navigate the use of technology in the classroom, as well as guiding students through learning how to balance academics with personal wellbeing. For QCE 2022, we have pivoted the focus of this year’s conference on building connections and safe spaces in education through our theme: Evolving and Adapting as a Global Learning Community. In our conference, we will focus on the role of educators as much more than a facilitator of curriculum, but as role models who are able to foster a safe space to prepare students to reach their full potential.

The conference will be taking place from Saturday, February 5th, to Sunday, February 6th, 2022 at the Queen’s Faculty of Education. The fee for the conference itself is $90.00, which includes the following:

  • Two keynote speakers
  • A special lunch-time presentation by Richard Van Camp
  • Four workshops that explore the themes of:
    • Diversifying and Decolonizing Curriculums
    • Health and Wellness
    • Connecting Globally
    • Education through a different lens
  • Interactive Q&A Panels of one of the following topics
    • Education Beyond the Classroom
    • Creating Inclusive Spaces and Recognizing Positionality
    • Practical Classroom Strategies for Primary/Junior Teachers
    • Practical Classroom Strategies for Intermediate/Senior Teachers
  • A number of catered meals over the course of the weekend
  • A formal banquet and social  with all delegates
  • A great opportunity to meet peers, and professionals from both similar and different backgrounds, who all share a similar passion for education

This year, we will also be offering an online version of the conference to accommodate delegates who are unable to join us in person.  This will also be running on February 5th and 6th and will cost $30.00.  This version of the conference will consist of the same keynote and panel presentations and it will have workshops that follow the same themes, but are designed specifically to be run online.

We welcome speakers and delegates who want to get involved through either an online or in-person format. The QCE team is continuing to monitor public health guidelines and have

contingency plans in place in the case that these protocols change. Additionally, as per the direction of both Queen’s University and the Ontario Government, all in-person attendees must be fully vaccinated.

In this email, I have included a poster graphic that can be distributed to your students and faculty members or can be hung around campus to spread the word!

Students are invited to register beginning Sunday, November 14th 2021, until  Sunday November 21st or spots are filledA limited number of bursaries are available for external delegates at the link to the bursary application can be found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdZ5srctbIIVdrg68tiD60m9wQ10LPkeAuE_uFDzeNdn13Mvw/viewform?usp=sf_link.  Bursaries applications are open from November 1st-8th and applicants will be notified of the decision regarding bursaries before registration opens on November 14th.

Auschwitz Virtual Tour

Wednesday, November 10, 2021:  4:30 - 6:00 pm

Jerzy Wójcik

While COVID-19 may have prevented travel to historical sites around the world, the virtual space has opened up to give viewers an alternative and unique perspective. November 9 – 10, 2021 marks the 83rd anniversary of Kristallnacht or Night of Broken Glass and we invite you to join Jerzy Wójcik, a guide at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum for over 14 years, who has created an innovative and immersive virtual program that is not just a guided tour, but a narrated history. The online experience includes visiting the place as it is today and as it was 80 years ago. The combination of drone recordings, 3D applications, historical pictures and footage creates an extraordinary learning experience.

This webinar is presented in partnership with the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre for Holocaust Studies.

Jerzy Wójcik
Jerzy Wójcik was born in the town of Oświęcim (Auschwitz), Poland. A graduate of the International Relations as well as Middle and Far East programs at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, he was, in 2010, awarded a PhD in political science. For a number of years, he has been working with several organizations and institutions in Poland: among others, the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, the Jagiellonian University Center for Holocaust Studies in Krakow, the Center for International Relations in Warsaw, and the European Association of Israel Studies. Since 2015 he runs the Holocaust Memorial Partnership.

The Process of Securing Placements

 Placement Procurement Process

The goal of the Placement Team is to secure as many placements as possible for students this upcoming academic year. The Placement Team will attempt to secure a K-6 placement in your preferred board first. If this is not possible, we will explore potential alternative options within the school board. If this is also not possible, we will then explore potential alternative placement options outside of the school board.

The Ontario College of Teachers is allowing alternative style placement days to count towards certification if traditional K-6 spots are unavailable in your area.

Types of Placements

TRADITIONAL/PAIRS
• Virtual from the classroom or from home

• Face to face (F2F) in the classroom with AT and students
• Hybrid model with some time spent teaching both virtually and F2F

ALTERNATIVE (WITHIN SCHOOL BOARD)
• SERT, Core French, Library, Planning Time, Grades 7-8 etc

ALTERNATIVE (OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL BOARD)
• Forest schools, public libraries, tutoring centres, science programs, early year education etc

Placements will be confirmed during the period of October 1 to November 9, 2021
You will receive an email from a member of the Placement Team as well as a link to access the Student Assessment Portal. Instructions for this portal will be provided at a later date.

Please note that although extensive planning and preparation is completed by the Lakehead Placement Team, outcomes depend on the availability of hosts and the provincial health decisions as a result of the ongoing pandemic.

if you have any questions or concerns.
The Placement Team attempts to respond to all emails within 1-2 business days.

"Learn About Dyslexia" - Workshop for Students

Gravenhurst Public Library is putting on a free workshop for Dyslexia Awareness Month that I thought your education students might find helpful, I was hoping you could pass on the following info to students:

Learn About Dyslexia is a free virtual workshop that will take place via Zoom on Oct. 6th from 6-7pm. The workshop is designed for educators and parents to help them identify children who may have dyslexia and give them the tools they need to move forward.

We will have an expert from The International Dyslexia Association speaking about what Dyslexia is, how to identify it, and how to support children who have it. Additionally, Gravenhurst Public Library's Child & Youth Services Librarian will be discussing resources for both teachers and parents.

Interested attendees can email jennifer.whipp@gravenhurst.ca to register.
