Clarification on Timeline for Starting Your OCT Online Application (Year 1)
Good Morning Students in Year 1 of our 2 Year B.Ed Program,
We have received many questions surrounding "how soon is too soon" for starting your Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) online application when you are only 4 weeks into Year 1 of the 2 Year B.Ed studies. Following this morning's update regarding the provincially required Math Proficiency Test (MPT), we wanted to send out some tips that will assist you in starting the OCT certification application process.
If you intend on taking advantage of the EQAO field test opportunity offered in January, you will need an OCT application number. We encourage all Year 1 (of 2 Year B.Ed program) students to start this process as soon as you can. If you have already started the online application and have your pending OCT #, you are in great shape.
For those who have not yet started the process, there is a really great YouTube clip that provides you with a step by step guide to how to navigate the online application. The video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=V0aoL3K6wfQ
TIPS about the OCT application:
- Please indicate an anticipated completion date of: April 30th, 2021
- You do not have to supply all of your required supporting documents (to make the application complete) right away - you can work on it over a period of time before you graduate
- You do not have to pay your certification fee right away to be provided with a pending OCT # - this too is something you can work on it over a period of time before you graduate
- Your pending OCT# does not change
As EQAO makes new information available, the Faculty of Education will be sure to share it with you.
YEAR 1 Students - Clarification PD On October 2nd, 2019
Attention Year 1 Students,
Please note that there will be no planned PD held on Wednesday, October 2nd, 2019.
Important News - Provincial Math Test
To All Students in the B.Ed Professional Program:
This is an update on what we know about the provincially-mandated teacher math exam—called the Math Proficiency Test (MPT)—that you will be required to complete in order to become a full member of the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT), after completing your degree.
- The EQAO will prepare and grade the exam.
- They are currently developing the test format, sample questions, and associated resources for preparing for the exam.
- The EQAO does plan on having sample modules for the test prepared in early November.
- These will be available online and provide feedback on your results.
To access these modules, and the test itself, you will need to have an OCT number. Our strong advice is to start the application process as soon as possible. Please go to https://www.oct.ca/ becoming-a-teacher
The EQAO will run a voluntary field-test of the exam in January. At the time of writing, the OCT and EQAO are allowing students in both Year One and Year Two to take the field-test.
We highly recommend you sit this field-test, for three reasons:
- If you are successful on the field-test, this will count as meeting the requirement of the College. (Yes, you read that right: if you write the practice exam, and you are successful, EQAO will recommend you to the College as having successfully written the MPT!)
- If you are unsuccessful, no record is kept of the result.
- The field-test will help you gain insight to the kinds of questions that will be on the exam just by writing the field-test.
- The EQAO will give you feedback on your performance—so this should help you prepare for the actual MPT.
- There will be no fee to write the field-test in January.
- At this time we do not expect to have much involvement with the administration of the field-test; it is being run by the EQAO, and we believe it will likely involve a university setting for ease of access and organization.
- The faculty will not be involved in setting up the exam.
- We expect the first sitting of the exam itself to take place in April, which again will be free.
- A third sitting of the test is planned for July.
The government of Ontario has made the decision to proceed with this test. Given the government’s decision, the Deans of all Faculties of Education in Ontario have asked that the implementation of the test be delayed until it can be properly developed and organized, and administered in an equitable manner.
To date there has been no indication that the test will be delayed, and we recommend you start the process to get an OCT number, and to prepare to write the field-test in January.

It is important to remember that all Year 2 students will still be required to attend classes on Wednesday, Nov 6th, 2019 to make up for the Monday lost due to Thanksgiving. Wednesday, November 6th, 2019 will run on a MONDAY class schedule.

Provincial Math Exam & Potential Support: EDUC 3517 Math Course
To all Year 2 of 2 Year B.Ed Program Students,
This is a follow-up to the email from the Dean regarding the new Provincial Mathematics Exam that is under development at EQAO:
For those who feel they need additional help to prepare for this exam, we will be scheduling sections (as needed) of EDUC 3517 in the winter term. This is a supplement, not a susbtitute for any of your required courses. It will require some "homework" because Math is not a subject you can develop in without regular practice, but the course will be Pass/Fail (or just Audited). Our understanding is that there is no additional cost required.
From the University Calendar: EDUC 3517 Teaching Intermediate Mathematics provides an in-depth background in the research-based development of pedagogical content knowledge for intermediate level (with an emphasis on Grades 7-8) Mathematics teaching, including knowledge and application of appropriate models, manipulatives, alternate methods, and reasoning.
This is a math-rich course. One of our Math leads in Thunder Bay, Dr. Ann Kajander, will adapt the content of the course as we learn more about the content of the EQAO exam that is being developed. She will, for example, include appropriate material to reflect the Gr. 11 content that will be on the exam.
Interested in Taking EDUC 3517 in the Winter Term
Anyone who wishes additional preparation for the exam is asked to complete the survey included in this email. Once we have a better sense of overall student interest, we will do our best to make the scheduling of this class (or classes) fit your timetable for the winter term.
Link to Google Survey (Let us know your interest): https://docs. google.com/forms/d/e/ 1FAIpQLSchduxzuXzwmf0peotXD- PlS2MlNitwiWbgrHiSoFEto3PTSQ/ viewform
At present, we are just gauging interest in this course. We are doing what we can under the circumstances to support our students in preparing for this unanticipated, external exam.
As the details for EDUC 3517 are finalized, we will share them with you. If you have any further questions, ask your cohort rep to bring them to the first cohort rep meeting on Wednesday, September 18, 2019.

Attention all YEAR 2 (of 2 Year B.Ed) Students Hoping to Graduate in the Spring: (June 2020)
As we move closer toward the beginning of the New Year and the final term of your B.Ed degree journey, there are a number of tasks you will have to complete to become recognized as a Certified Teacher in Ontario, by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT).
We ask that each of you complete the necessary steps to create an Online Certification Applicant Profile, via the Ontario College of Teacher`s website. (https://www.oct.ca/)
Starting your Online Certification Applicant Profile should be done as soon as possible.
Note About The OCT Application Fee:
You do not have to pay the OCT application fee before you can supply the Faculty of Education with your "pending" OCT Application #. The application fee can be paid at a later date. The Faculty of Education requires your pending OCT # as soon as you start your OCT application process.
Your Application/ Certification Number will not change, as you work to supply OCT with everything required on their certification checklist.
IF THE FACULTY OF EDUCATION DOES NOT RECEIVE YOUR SUBMISSION OF THE INFORMATION REQUESTED IN THIS SURVEY by the communicated deadline, YOU WILL NOT BE FORMALLY RECOMMENDED FOR CERTIFICATION TO TEACH IN ONTARIO TO THE ONTARIO COLLEGE OF TEACHERS, in late May 2020.
AND, if you are late with your submission of the requested information, THERE MAY BE DELAYS IN THE HANDLING OF YOUR APPLICATION, OR CHANGES TO THE REQUIREMENTS THAT NEED TO BE SATISFIED, TO HAVE YOUR CERTIFICATION APPLICATION CONSIDERED.
In order for us to be able to formally recommend you to the Ontario College of Teachers for your certification at the end of May 2020, we need each of you to answer a few questions on this form (link below), by the deadline indicated.
Link to Survey To Submit Your Pending OCT # to the Faculty of Education:

Happy 2 Be Here Initiative - Cohort Calendars
Hello!
The Operation Happy 2 Be Here group (OH2BH) is looking to study the flow and level of work throughout the fall and winter semesters. The idea here is to get a snapshot of the flow of the semesters, and for instructors to see if it's possible to adjust the cohort's workload if too many assignments fall at or around the same time.
As part of our initiative, we have created Cohort Calendars. All teacher candidates and course instructors are invited to select the relevant links from the list below that apply to them. Selecting the link will prompt you to log in to your LU account and then will subscribe you to that calendar and its content and updates.
We are, however, seeking assistance from teacher candidates from each cohort (ideally 2 or 3 from each, but at least 1) who would volunteer to add assignment dates to your cohort's schedule. These volunteers would then email Meridith Lovell-Johnston (mlovell@lakeheadu.ca) with their name and cohort number to be given editor access.
When adding assignments, please select (by clicking) the date and time (if one is set, or use the beginning of your class time) the assignment is due. In the event title, please write the course code (e.g., EDUC4031), instructors' surname (if there is room), short name for assignment, and weighting (e.g., 20%). Please preface the title with an asterisk (*) if it is an elective or ** if it is your Planning, Evaluation, and Classroom Management course in year 1 (because these will overlap cohorts). If there is room in the title or the description, you can add relevant details such as length.
Please let us know when the information is entered and we will run a report from each calendar. Ideally, we would have all the information entered before next Wednesday, September 11, and in winter by the first Friday of the term (January 10).
Thank you for helping us with this initiative!

URGENT & REQUIRED: Registration in EDUC 3519 - Unsuccessful in 1st Attempt of Math Exam - Read Carefully
Good Day B.Ed Professional Program Students,
Now that the Sept 7th, 2019 math exam results have been released, the Faculty of Education is reaching out to all Year 1 (of 2 Year B.Ed program) students who were unsuccessful, to clearly communicate the next steps and the tight timeline to complete what is required of you.
Step #1
Make an appointment with our Math Exam Coordinator, Sharon Malyczewsky to review your exam. This meeting will help you determine your strengths and areas of opportunity, to focus your studying efforts for your next attempt in March 2020. Meeting with the Math Exam Coordinator is a requirement for all Year 1 students. Sign up sheets are available in the Education Administration Office at Heritage Place.
Step #2
Please drop your .50 FCE education elective from your current course registration. You must do this, to make room in your course registration for a section of EDUC 3519 - this course is a requirement for all students who are unsuccessful in their 1st attempt of the Math Competency Exam. EDUC 3519 will now count as your elective in your Year 1 studies.
Step #3
Complete the Google Survey named: "Registering For EDUC 3519 - Mathematics for PJ Elective" included in this email - by no later than Monday, September 9th, 2019 at 9am. This survey allows you to submit a preference of which section of EDUC 3519 you are interested in. IMPORTANT: There is no guarantee that you will be assigned your preferred section as there are 25 seats in each section and EDUC 3519 course section assignments will be decided on a first-submitted, first-considered basis.
Link to Google Survey: https://docs.google. com/forms/d/e/ 1FAIpQLSf1MqBDMrF1E4VkHWQy53e8 pFtMoEsgTwLf4IwswKXhd_SfvQ/ viewform
Step #4
On Monday, Sept 9th, 2019 the Faculty of Education will review the survey submissions received, and place all students in an assigned section of EDUC 3519 based on the approach outlined in Step #3. The Faculty of Education will arrange to have you manually registered for your assigned section of EDUC 3519. Once completed, you will receive a system-generated email confirming the addition to your course registration, in your Lakehead University email inbox.
Step #5
Once you receive the details for your registered section of EDUC 3519 as an addition to your course registration, it is the Faculty of Education's expectation that you begin to attend your EDUC 3519 class the week of Sept 9-13th, 2019, as a part of your regular class schedule for the balance of the year.
The Faculty of Education wishes you the very best in your continued B.Ed studies.
