Peel District School Board Is Hiring!

Peel District School Board is recruiting both Elementary and Secondary Occasional Teachers to start in Fall 2018.

Clicking on a specific job will take you to that job posting on the Apply to Education website where you may create a profile and apply to specific jobs.

Registering For B.Ed Professional Program Courses - Fall 2018

This communication is going out to all students who will be registering for B.Ed Professional Program courses for the 1st time, on July 9th, 2018.

Please read this email carefully.

You may have seen recent MyInfo communications that recommend that you use the "Build My Pre-Registration Schedule Builder" found in myInfo to start building your schedule before registration opens.

Please ignore this information. There is no need to use this tool.

Why?
Course Registration in Lakehead's B.Ed Professional Program is handled quite differently.
There is no need to search the website to try and determine what courses you should be taking and then register for them.

The Faculty of Education in Orillia assigns you to a specific pre-planned, conflict-free class schedule.
You will receive the details about your class schedule assignment (specific courses and sections) via email from Julie Howell at 9am on July 9th, 2018 when B.Ed Professional Program registration opens.

Class schedule assignments in the B.Ed Professional Program make it easier for our commuter students to find common times to meet with fellow students for group work or presentation planning, not to mention that assigning specific courses also allows us to ensure that you are not missing any required courses, that could prevent you from graduating once you have successfully completed our program.

If you are already a Lakehead Concurrent Education student who hopes to transition into your B.Ed Professional Program in Fall 2018 and are taking summer courses:
  • You will receive a B.Ed class schedule assignment on July 9th, 2018.
  • You won't be able to register for your assigned courses/sections until such time as a final degree audit is performed, and you have been approved for entry.
  • You will simply hang onto your class schedule assignment email, until you have been approved.
  • Once approved, we will lift your registration restriction to allow you to register.

Preparing For Your Math Competency Exam - Saturday September 8th, 2018

We thought it might be of benefit to circulate a number of practice math tests (and their answer keys) so each of you can use these resources (if you wish) to prepare for the upcoming sitting of the compulsory Math Competency Exam, on Saturday September 8, 2018.

Please see the email sent on May 8, 2018, for the the practice tests and answer keys which may assist you, as you prepare for the exam.

Specific details about Exam Day including your writing location assignment, will be communicated to each of you, approximately 2 weeks prior to the exam sitting.

Here Are Some Other Great Resources To Help You Prepare For September 8th, 2018:

CLIPS – Interactive Online Learning
This is particularly good for learning about fractions.
http://www.oame.on.ca/clips/index.html or Google “MathCLIPS”

Gap Closing  - Online materials for Grade 6 content
Google “Gap Closing – EduGAINS” OR, go to: http://www.edugains.ca/newsite/math/assessmentfor_as_of/assessment_gap.html

Why Do B.Ed Professional Program Students Have To Complete This Exam?

A mathematics content exam is part of the compulsory Primary/Junior Mathematics Methods course in the Professional Year. The pass level is set at 75%. This exam ensures that all prospective teachers understand basic mathematical concepts at the Grade 6/7 level. Most students are working well beyond this level and pass this exam with ease.
Some Primary/Junior students however, find the exam a challenge. If you think that you are in the latter category, visit the course website to take the sample exam. If you have difficulties with the sample exam there are further suggestions on the website at:  http://flash.lakeheadu.ca/~ed4050/Content_Exam/content_exam.htm

Students must pass the exam in order to complete their degree. The mathematics methods course (EDUC 4050 or EDUC 4033) is designed to teach instructional methods rather than review this elementary mathematics content knowledge. It is assumed that students will enter the B.Ed Professional program with an adequate level of mathematical knowledge. Therefore, the onus is on the student to undertake his or her own study in this area should it be required.

The exam will take place Saturday, September 8th, 2018 from 10:00am - 12:00 noon.
Please mark your calendars as there are no alternate sittings.

Students who choose to not show up for any scheduled sitting of the math exam, will have this opportunity counted as a failed attempt to satisfy this program requirement.

Students who fail or miss the exam will have their next opportunity Thursday March 21st, 2019 10:00am - 12:00 noon.

Details about both free and paid math workshops, mock exam opportunities, brush up sessions and all other math supports we make available to you, will be communicated to all B.Ed students, once details are finalized.
