Year 2 BEd Students Only - Interested in a Remote Placement (Placement #4) - March/April 2018

Remote Teaching Opportunities

Teacher Candidates (TCs) in YEAR 2 are eligible to request a remote teaching placement for March/April, 2018.

Prior to being granted permission to enter into the remote placement, TCs will be required to submit summative teaching assessments to provide evidence of successful completion of the first three placements (two-year program).

Please Note:

TCs who selected any of our partner boards may already be committed to their placement(s) in that board and may not be able switch at this time.

Remote placements are rewarding but also challenging.

It is essential that TCs be solid in their practices and understandings of teaching/learning. School attendance is an issue in each of these communities. Instances of addiction and substance abuse are fairly common in most areas.

The Northern Practicum Video

(produced by Teach for Canada) provides compelling testimonies from recent graduates regarding their experiences and the value of remote teaching placements:

Self-Funded Remote Placements

Eligible TCs, from Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses, have equal access to several self-funded remote placement opportunities.

Self-funded remote placement opportunities include Armstrong (room for 4 TCs), Red Lake, Pickle Lake, Sioux Lookout, Moosonee and more.

  • Any TC expressing interest in one of these placements will receive a $250 stipend from LU to offset travel costs.
  • The TC is responsible for all expenses (transportation, accommodations and daily living).
If you are interested in a self-funded remote placement, please contact Catherine Hannon asap.

Eligible TCs, from Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses, also have equal access to 15 highly subsidized remote placement opportunities including

  • Project Journey (Pikangikum - Eenchokay Birchstick School; 6 TCs) and;
  • Project Canada (Sandy Lake – Fly-in, 4 TCS / Grassy Narrows – Drive-in, 4 TCs; and, Fort Hope – Fly-in, 2 TCs)
A goal of both Projects (Journey and Canada), from a community perspective, is to recruit and retain effective teachers for permanent positions.

TCs are under no obligation to accept offers, though these are likely to be made. This is a great opportunity to see if teaching in a remote community is a ‘good fit’ for you.

Expression of interest for any of the subsidized placements is by application to your Professional Experiences Coordinator Catherine Hannon - channon@lakeheadu.ca) cc’d to Julie Howell - (jhowell@lakeheadu.ca.)

Project Journey

Is a partnership between LU, the OPP, and the community of Pikangikum.

Last year, six TCs completed a 5-week placement in Pikangikum.

  • Three accepted permanent contracts and are now teaching in the community.
  • TCs receive free transportation to/from Pikangikum, Safe Talk training (suicide prevention), and accommodations, along with a $100 weekly food stipend from the OPP for running Saturday activities (9 am to 4 pm).
  • TCs also receive a $250 stipend from LU to support higher food expenses.
  • TCs will be responsible for any additional daily living expenses.

This initiative aims to reduce suicide and violence rates within the community.

We hope to send 6 TCs in March/April 2018.

A Thunder Bay faculty advisor and professional experiences coordinator will make one site visit, during placement, to provide support to TCs and ATs.

How to Express Your Interest For Project Journey:

Interested TCs must complete and submit the attached Project Journey proposal to Catherine Hannon - (channon@lakeheadu.ca) cc’d to Julie Howell - (jhowell@lakeheadu.ca.)

(Along with any additional documentation specified in the application form), by Wednesday, October 11, in order to be considered.

Project Canada

Is a pilot project funded by The Rideau Hall Foundation. Rideau Hall will provide free transportation and accommodations to TCs, along with Safe Talk Training.

  • TCs also receive a $250 stipend from LU to support higher food expenses.
  • There is no commitment to lead activities on weekends, and therefore, no additional weekly activity stipend.
  • TCs will be responsible for any additional daily living expenses.
  • Up to ten TCs will be offered support to enter into remote placements in any of the following three locations: Sandy Lake (4 spaces), Grassy Narrows (4 spaces) or Fort Hope (2 spaces) for the March/April 2018 placement.

A Thunder Bay faculty advisor will make one site visit, during placement, to provide support to TCs and ATs.

How to Express Your Interest For Project Canada:

Interested TCs must complete and submit the attached Project Canada proposal to (Catherine Hannon - channon@lakeheadu.ca) cc’d to Julie Howell - (jhowell@lakeheadu.ca.)

(Along with any additional documentation specified in the application form), by Wednesday, October 11, in order to be considered.

B.Ed Students in YEAR 1 of 2 Year Program Only - Accessing the Education Portal & Release of Your Fall 2017 Placement Details

PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS COMMUNICATION VERY CAREFULLY

Your Fall 2017 Placement details are now available in the Education Portal.

Your First Step:Log into the Education Portal to review your placement details. (Link is available later in this communication).Confirm that the placement you see in the Education Portal online match that of our Education departmental records BEFORE contacting your host school.

Every student is required to verify their placement details in-person with the Education Administration Team and attend the Wednesday Sept 27th PD Session, before contacting their host teacher.

Your Second Step:A table will be set up the morning of Tuesday Sept 26th, 2017 to verify the confirmed placement data you see in the Education Portal, matches our internal records. A "check" to verify a match must be completed by every student. If you are unavailable during these scheduled times to visit the table, please be sure to confirm details within the Faculty of Education Administration Office at Heritage Place.

Table Placement Detail Verification Times:Tuesday Sept 26, 2017
  • 12:00 - 1:00pm - Cohort C1
  • 2:30 - 3:30pm - Cohorts A1 and B1
Important Placement Confirmation Practices:
  • No requests for board changes will be considered
  • We do not permit confirmed placements to be traded
  • Confirmed Placements will only be changed for circumstances involving personal or professional conflicts of interest
  • Remember that while out on placement, you can communicate with all of the other B.ED students via your D2L 4398 Group Section
    • (This is also a requirement as outlined in your EDUC 4398 syllabus.)
Where We Stand In Our Progress Today:
  • 95% of Year 1 B.Ed students have a confirmed placement
  • At times the teacher or grade information may have changed due to internal circumstances at the placement school.  We will notify you if we receive such information, or alternately, please notify us immediately if your placement school notifies you directly of a change
  • There may be changes to confirmed placements - but we will notify any impacted students if required
If I Don't Yet Have a Confirmed Placement - How Will I Be Notified When I Do Have A Confirmed Placement?:As the outstanding placements are confirmed we will upload them to this webpage, and you can log-in and check periodically.  All outstanding placements will be updated in this online portal, as they are confirmed. Please take a moment to ensure that you can log on (same username and password as you LU email).

WE REQUEST THAT YOU DO NOT INUNDATE US WITH EMAIL. Placements are confirmed at varying times, completely dependent on the specific board we have an agreement with.  Although every attempt is made to confirm placement requests as expeditiously as possible some boards due to demands on their resources may be later than others in being able to do so.

PLEASE BE PATIENT AND CHECK THE EDUCATION PORTAL FREQUENTLY FOR UPDATES - THEY WILL BE MADE DAILY, AS THE BALANCE OF OUTSTANDING PLACEMENTS ARE CONFIRMED.

Do not, under any circumstance contact Boards, Principals, Associate Teachers, etc to attempt to secure your own placementDoing so will jeopardize your entire  B.Ed Professional Program.

New Conflicts Of Interest? It is important that our "conflict of interest" school records for each student is accurate.  This refers to any schools where you have immediate relatives/ spouse or schools you have worked or attended within 6 years - if there are any to add please let me know by email.

What If A School Board Cannot Locate A Placement For Me?If a school board is unable to arrange a requested placement, the individual teacher candidate will be contacted and asked to name an alternative partnership board.

Required Documentation For Entry Into A School:EVERY student must supply the Education Administration Office with copies of their PRC with VSS and their TB skin test BEFORE they are permitted to step foot inside a host school.    All up-to-date original documentation required (police record check/vulnerable sector screening and TB skin test) must be presented before the school Principal will allow you into the school.  Review your school board's documentation expectations found on our website, to be sure that this is how your documentation is to be presented.

Have You Completed The Required Health & Safety Training? It is up to each of you to understand and complete the required H&S training that your school boards requires of you. This must be done before your placement begins.

Incorrect Information Appearing In Your Placement Details? If any of the information appears incorrect (including your Faculty Advisor ) please let me know.(If you are not sure who your Placement Faculty Advisor is - this is your instructor for EDUC 4350/4398).Please let us know if you discover incorrect spelling of names, email addresses or phone numbers for your host school or your associate teacher.

Weekly Message From The Chair - September 22, 2017

Hello everyone, I hope you had a learning-filled third week of classes. It's a busy time in the office arranging placement details.

I apologize for not sending this message last week; it was prepared but I was in Toronto for three days of recruiting (see below) and forgot to push the "send" button!

Here is a link to last week's video featuring MEd students Lauren and Luke: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkJN4Q2qfs0&t=37s

They provide special information about the Math Skills Development course, EDUC 7033 YAO. If you were unsuccessful in the Math Competency Exam this month, this paid course might be an option to help you improve your Math understanding.
Please don't forget my invitation to join my Facebook group, My Teaching Journey. It's a place where graduates can give you advice. Feel free to pose questions of your own. They've been through the program, and they know how you feel!

Have a great weekend. I'll be at the Ontario Universities' Fair at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre talking to Grade 12s and their families about making that important decision to attend university.
