Important Information - Education Fair - February 4 from 1:00-5:00pm



Student Affairs is hosting the annual Education Fair this upcoming Wednesday, February 4th from 1:00-5:00pm in the Learning Commons and upper hallways of Heritage Place.  

This is a GREAT opportunity to chat with recruiters from both domestic and international boards/placement companies.
Come prepared as some recruiters will be doing interviews on the spot or scheduling from Feb. 4 - 6 on campus; other groups are hosting information sessions on the evening of the Fair.  Full schedule is posted on the event website: www.lakeheadu.ca/current-students/jobs-and-career/career-fair/education-fair-orillia

PIZZA be served at 4PM during the Education Fair for all Professional Year students. For cohorts in class at this time, we will reserve some for you rather than disrupting class.  Please bring your own beverages!

How to Prepare?

· Review the LIST OF EXHIBITORS and Event Schedule beforehand. Think about who you want to speak with most and make the rounds according to your interests.
· Dress to impress!  Pull out your Teacher attire.
· Bring several copies of your resume, as you may want to start your application with some companies and might even get an interview that day!
· Bring a notebook and pen so you can write down questions to ask and record information you gather from recruiters.

Please note that the Learning Commons and Hallways are booked for this event; ALL TABLES in the Commons will be used from set-up 11:00am on Wednesday until the Fair ends at 5:00pm, so please plan your day accordingly. 

Couches and quiet study rooms are still available, as is the Computer Lab.

Free Yoga Session at Orillia Heritage Place and Free Rock Climbing at Rotary Place

REMINDER - NO STUDENT PARKING AT HERITAGE PLACE - AT ANY TIME OF DAY

ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS:

This is a reminder that there is absolutely no student parking at the Heritage Place building. (This includes both tenant or visitor parking).

Given this announcement, all students are encouraged to check the Transportation page on the Lakehead University website for parking options, within the City of Orillia.  

The entire Heritage Place Building lot is monitored on a daily basis and cars parked illegally will be tagged by Security and towed at the owner’s expense.

REMINDER ETFO Workshop - Student Mental Health in Ontario Classrooms - January 23rd, 2015

THIS IS A REMINDER TO ALL STUDENTS: 

The Faculty of Education has partnered with the Elementary Teacher's Federation of Ontario, to offer you this important and relevant workshop on January 23rd, 2015.
Although it is not mandatory to attend, you will find that its topic is one of growing importance in Ontario classrooms.

Workshop Description:
This workshop provides an introduction to student mental health, including promoting a positive mental health environment, common student mental health issues, and classroom strategies to help address them.  Key student mental health resources will also be highlighted. 

Because of space constraints, we have planned 2 sessions on each date.
Cohorts have been assigned to a specific time-slot to attend these available workshops, based on availability in class schedules.

Technology in Today's Classroom Workshop with Marci Duncan

Attention B.Ed Students,

Marci Duncan, a Technology in the Classroom resource teacher with the Simcoe County District School Board, will be facilitating a workshop on Wednesday January 28th from 5:00-7:00pm in OH8.  Marci was a very popular member of our Educator's Panel on October 7th, and has been asked to return to continue to help us promote learning in today's 21st century classroom.

Some areas of discussion will be the use of technology in teaching and learning today, how to set up a "bring your own device" classroom, apps that promote global thinking and exciting action research projects currently happening in schools.

Please sign-up for this workshop in the Education Office early to avoid disappointment, as seats are limited.  There is no charge for this session.

One item I neglected to mention is the Perfecting the Practicum course. You must be recommended by your Faculty Advisor for this course. It occurs on 3 Saturdays- Jan. 24Feb. 7, and March 7 at Heritage Place. You should register with Rosa with your FA's recommendation. There is a fee of $75.00 for this course.

Message from Wellness Centre and the Orillia After Hours Medical Clinic - TB Skin Tests

Mantoux /Tuberculin (TB)Testing


Please note that effective immediately the Orillia After Hours Medical Clinic will not be performing TB skin tests. This change in services offered at the clinic will allow attending physicians more time to treat patients seeking medical care for illness.

Students requiring this test are encouraged to request the test from their Primary Care Providers or visit a walk in clinic in Barrie.

Notice of Availability of Professional Year Letters For Your Portfolio - ONLY UNTIL MONDAY MARCH 16th, 2015

Attention All Professional Year B.Ed Students:
Effective Monday January 5th, 2015 the Education Administration Team will make available (upon request) specific letters for inclusion in each student's personal portfolio.

What Professional Year Letters Can Be Requested?

PERSONALIZED LETTERS (with associated fee) are available:

1) Letter of Eligibility/Good Standing
What Is It?
This is a letter acknowledging your enrollment in the program while program is in progress, speaks of upcoming convocation in June 2015, if  you meet all of the B.Ed degree requirements. (This letter is recommended should there be a delay in processing your official OCT certification. Should you wish to start applying for teaching opportunities while you wait for your official cert # from OCT, this letter is a good addition to any application.)

Why Do I Need This Letter?
The letter of eligibility/good standing will also come in handy if:
·  You are planning on applying or registering for AQs with different institutions
·  You are pursuing a teaching opportunity abroad or in another province, and you need proof you will earn your B.Ed degree to apply, before convocation or receiving your OCT certification #
·  You are pursuing a local teaching opportunity and you need proof you will earn your B.Ed degree to apply, before convocation or receiving your OCT certification #
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you are a student who has not satisfied all program academic requirements,  or have not successfully completed and/or deferred your first  or second placement, you will not qualify for this letter. 

Similarly, if you are a student who has not yet successfully passed the Math Competency Exam, you must wait to request this letter until the results from the March sitting of the Math Competency Exam are announced.

2) Religious Education Elective Letter
What Is It?
This is a letter of confirmation of attendance upon successful completion of the Religious Education elective (EDUC 3236). 
This letter may be necessary when applying to specific Catholic School Boards, as a new teacher. 
(It is up to you to complete the research to determine if it would be of benefit to you.)

NOTE: 
If you are enrolled in a WINTER offering of this course, we will not generate a EDUC 3236 letter for students until a FINAL Mark is awarded.

GENERIC LETTERS(no associated fee) are available:
3) Math Competency Letter
What is It?
This is a letter that outlines the intent of the EDUC 4050 course, acknowledging that LU is the only Faculty of Ed to make successful completion of this course a requirement to graduate. Bulk copies of this letter are available for all Professional Year students in the Education Administration Office.

How To Obtain Your Letters:

Come in person to the Education Administration Office in Heritage Place to pick up the letters you desire.
The cost for each letter is: $5.00 per letter & monies must be received at the time the each letter is surrendered.
PLEASE COME PREPARED WITH EXACT MONIES IF PAYING WITH CASH.

Accepted Payment: Cash or a Money Order payable to "Lakehead University"

Should you request a letter late in the year, and are unavailable to pay for it and claim it in person, we would ask that you ensure that you make arrangements to send us a Money Order and a postage paid return envelope (complete with desired return address), and we will expedite your request.

The Education Administration Office will only make these letters available to all 2014/2015 students until: Monday March 16th, 2015

Any requests for any of these letters received after this date, may not be fulfilled.

Attention All Professional Year B.Ed Students:
This is a reminder of the compulsory full-day off-site Professional Development Workshop held at Geneva Park Convention Center on Wednesday January 7th, 2015.

ALL Professional Year B.Ed students are required to be in attendance.
ALL Professional Year EDUC courses regularly scheduled for Wednesday January 7th, 2015 will be cancelled, will be made up on: MONDAY MARCH 16th, 2015.

A Few Things To Remember About January 7th, 2015:

Registration Sign In For All Students:
You must sign in at the registration desk in the lobby of the Centennial Centre when you arrive, where you will be given your program materials. The registration desk will be open from 8:30 to 9:00 am.

Registration TIPS:
·  If you received an online confirmation of the workshops you successfully registered for, in late October 2014 - PLEASE PRINT IT AND BRING IT WITH YOU.
·  For those who did not complete the online registration by the communicated deadline, you must register manually for their workshops - please plan to be there by no later than 8:15am to manually register from the workshops that are still available

LOOKING FOR STUDENT VOLUNTEERS:
Our Ministry partners are looking for 4 B.Ed students who would be willing to assist with the registration table, before the event begins. If you are interested, please send an email to Julie Howell ASAP.
What To Expect Following Mandatory Registration:
The program will commence promptly at 9:00 am in the Auditorium. Please refer to the Building Futures website (www.ontario.ca/buildingfutures) for a copy of the agenda and further information about the day. Beverages and a light afternoon snack will be provided on the day.
Students must plan to bring their own lunch with them, for the day.
There will be a designated area where students can have their lunch during the designated break.

Request Of Each Participant:
Since the Ministry of Education is making every effort to organize greener events, your cooperation is greatly appreciated. We will not be providing paper handouts of the workshop presentations; instead, we ask you to bring your own pen and paper for taking notes.
We also encourage you to bring your own beverage container (travel mug) to cut down on waste.
Parking at YMCA Geneva Park:
I thought it would be worthwhile to provide you with parking instructions since I'm not sure how well everyone knows the Geneva Park YMCA centre.

Directions For Parking:
·  When you come into Geneva Park you will see the registration building (Centennial Centre) on your left.
·  Keep driving past it while staying to your right. 
·  You will drive right into the main parking lot which is first come, first serve. A parking pass is not required
·  We ask that students carpool wherever possible, to ensure there is adequate parking for all.
·  We also ask that any driver adhere to legal parking stalls within the available lots

Declaring Intent To Graduate in June 2015

This is just a reminder to all Professional Year B.Ed students.
The "Intent To Graduate" form is now available in MyInfo.
If you hope to graduate from the B.Ed program on June 6th, 2015, this form must be completed.
How to Locate the Intent To Graduate form:
  • Login to MyInfo
  • Click on the "For Students" tab
  • Locate the the header named: Graduation
  • Click on "Intent To Graduate" (and complete all required information)
