ESTA-O Statement and Resources re: anti-Asian violence

Statement from the Education Student Teachers’ Association of Orillia regarding the March 16, 2021 attack in Atlanta, Georgia:

ESTA-O condemns all forms of racially motivated and misogynist violence. We are outraged and heartbroken by the murder of 8 individuals, many of whom were women of Asian descent. These women were mothers, daughters, sisters, friends and neighbours. Their names were: Soon Chung Park, Hyun Jung Grant, Suncha Kim, Young Ae Yue, Daoyou Feng, Xiaojie Tan, Delaina Ashley Yaun and Paul Andre Michels. More news is coming out each day about the victims. We learned that Hyun Jung Grant (maiden name: Kim), who was a single mom, leaves behind two young boys, who now have to survive by themselves. We also learned that Mr. Elcias Hernandez-Ortiz was injured during the attack and is recovering in the hospital.

We are deeply disturbed by the increase in anti-Asian discrimination, hate and violence in Canada. We recognize that there is ongoing trauma, anger and grief associated with anti-Asian assaults. We stand in solidarity with organizations, initiatives and campaigns that advocate for justice for Asians of all intersectionalities. We encourage you to address any microaggressions, violent acts and racial slurs while you are on placement, in your school, in your Lakehead classes, and in your hometowns. #StopAsianHate

We encourage anyone affected by these incidents to reach out for support during this time.

To join ESTA-O’s Peer Chat WhatsApp group, please email orilliaesta [at] gmail dot com.

To guide your work as educators in the classroom, we have compiled a list of resources:

You may also donate to organizations who support migrant workers/Asian-Canadian communities here:

Upcoming 2021 Grad Photo Session

If you are graduating this Spring and would like to book a photo session, please see the link below for additional information.

N.B.  Students are urged to make themselves knowledgeable about and to weigh carefully the risks of attendance at photography sessions before deciding to attend, including especially the risk of being infected with COVID-19 which may result in serious harm or even death to both themselves and others with whom they come into contact.  Students should be aware that COVID-19 may be spread by individuals who are themselves infected but lack symptoms.  While Lassman Studios has advised the University that it has protocols in place to block the spread of COVID-19 at its sessions, the University cannot verify the operation and effectiveness of those protocols and, in any case, even if the most stringent, comprehensive, and consistently applied preventative measures are in place, neither the University nor the photography firm can guarantee that they will prevent infection by COVID-19.  If students decide to use the services of the photographer, they do so entirely at their own risk and Lakehead University makes this information available only on condition that individuals who attend photography sessions on the basis of this information release Lakehead University from all liability for any illness, injury, or death that they suffer in consequence and on condition that, before attending photography sessions, students apprise themselves fully of the laws, rulings, and advice of the Province of Ontario and local health authorities to which the information provided by the University is entirely subject.

Fall 2020 Alternative Placement Statement

This message is being sent from the Placement Team.

It has recently been brought to our attention that some students enrolled in an alternative style placement in the Fall 2020 semester had an incorrect statement regarding their placement number on their summative assessment. This statement has been removed and now the summative accurately reflects the placement completed in Fall 2020.

If you have any questions, please reach out to orplacement.educ@lakeheadu.ca.

Looking for Volunteers to Participate in a Research Project

My name is Lauren D Turner and I’m a NOSM resident and research assistant working with Dr. Vicki Kristman in the Department of Health Sciences at Lakehead University. We are conducting a research project entitled “Burnout and Depression in Students”.

The purpose of this study is to examine the prevalence and associated factors of burnout and depression in medical and non-medical students. If you agree to participate in this study, you would be asked to complete some questionnaires online that ask you about certain attitudes, behaviours, and emotions. These questionnaires will take about 20 minutes to complete and are completely anonymous.

Participants must be either full time students at Lakehead or Laurentian University. For the purpose of the study, full time status is defined as either a 60% or more course load or at least 3 full course equivalents (FCE’s) over the fall and winter terms. Participation in the study is completely voluntary and participants relationship/academic status at their institution will not be affected whether they choose to participate or not.

If you’d like to learn more about the study and potentially participate, click here: https://lakeheadhs.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_4TTd3VmXIBYmMm2

If you have questions about the study please contact Lauren Turner at lauturner@nosm.ca
