Ontario Wilderness Leadership Symposium 2020 - REGISTER NOW!

The Ontario Wilderness Leadership Symposium (aka OWLS) is an annual event organized to support the development of emerging wilderness trip leaders in Ontario. This low-cost, three-day professional development symposium will offer attendees opportunities for relevant leadership and skills-based training, a chance to network with others employed in this unique field, and explore a variety of potential avenues for future career development.

Young adults, with experience leading wilderness trips and residing in Ontario, are encouraged to register to participate in this event. Specifically, we are looking for recent University or College graduates or students nearing completion and/or individuals who already have some professional experience leading wilderness trips for a summer camp, school or leadership program, commercial outfitter or other organization. Those interested are encouraged to register quickly, as OWLS has limited enrollment!

Please spread the word about this event to others you think would benefit from attending. In late April, we will be selecting 40 participants who are eager to learn, develop their wilderness leadership skills, network with experienced professionals working in this field, meet peers from different organizations, and participate in all aspects of the event. Information about OWLS has now been posted on the COEO website, including registration details.

We look forward to receiving registrations and hope that many will be able to join us at the Norval Outdoor School near Georgetown, Ontario in early May!

Sincerely,

OWLS ‘20 Organizing Committee

*Please note that bursaries are available. Although the main objective of this event is to offer a significant learning and networking experience at a highly reduced cost, the OWLS Organizing Committee realizes that even the $75 registration fee may be out of reach for some folks, and so the COEO Board of Directors has set aside funds for five individuals who require financial assistance in order to attend OWLS '20. Bursary details can also be found on the OWLS webpage.

Availability of Math Brush Up Sessions - Before March 2020 Sitting of Math Exam

The Faculty of Education has scheduled "Brush Up" Math Sessions for any interested students, that will take place before the compulsory Math Competency Exam is set to occur. The brush-up sessions are scheduled on 2 dates in early March 2020 at Heritage Place. The Math Competency Exam takes place on Thursday March 19, 2020. More details regarding the exam will follow in the next couple of weeks.

PLEASE CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING BEFORE YOU SIGN UP FOR THE BRUSH-UP SESSIONS:
  • These sessions are ONLY for students who have been working on their math content knowledge. These sessions are designed to give those students who have been working on their math knowledge a chance to practice problem-solving prior to the exam.
  • These are not workshops designed to TEACH you math.
  • It is not possible for us to teach all the relevant math you will need for the exam in one or two sessions (and you will find these sessions more confusing than helpful).
  • However, if you have been working on your math, or feel confident about your math understanding, these sessions will provide you with an opportunity for some extra practice.

WHEN ARE THE "BRUSH UP" SESSIONS TAKING PLACE?
  • Tues March 3rd, 2020 - 5-7pm ( three rooms OH007, OH008 and OH010)
  • Tues March 10th, 2020 - 5-7pm (just two rooms OH008 and OH010)
NOTE: Choose a session that does not conflict with any of your required courses as a part of your class schedule

HOW DO I SIGN UP?
We would ask that any B.Ed student wishing to attend either session, please plan to visit the Education Administration Office in Heritage Place to sign up.
