Year 2 BEd Students Only - Interested in a Remote Placement (Placement #4) - March/April 2018

Remote Teaching Opportunities

Teacher Candidates (TCs) in YEAR 2 are eligible to request a remote teaching placement for March/April, 2018.

Prior to being granted permission to enter into the remote placement, TCs will be required to submit summative teaching assessments to provide evidence of successful completion of the first three placements (two-year program).

Please Note:

TCs who selected any of our partner boards may already be committed to their placement(s) in that board and may not be able switch at this time.

Remote placements are rewarding but also challenging.

It is essential that TCs be solid in their practices and understandings of teaching/learning. School attendance is an issue in each of these communities. Instances of addiction and substance abuse are fairly common in most areas.

The Northern Practicum Video

(produced by Teach for Canada) provides compelling testimonies from recent graduates regarding their experiences and the value of remote teaching placements:

Self-Funded Remote Placements

Eligible TCs, from Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses, have equal access to several self-funded remote placement opportunities.

Self-funded remote placement opportunities include Armstrong (room for 4 TCs), Red Lake, Pickle Lake, Sioux Lookout, Moosonee and more.

  • Any TC expressing interest in one of these placements will receive a $250 stipend from LU to offset travel costs.
  • The TC is responsible for all expenses (transportation, accommodations and daily living).
If you are interested in a self-funded remote placement, please contact Catherine Hannon asap.

Eligible TCs, from Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses, also have equal access to 15 highly subsidized remote placement opportunities including

  • Project Journey (Pikangikum - Eenchokay Birchstick School; 6 TCs) and;
  • Project Canada (Sandy Lake – Fly-in, 4 TCS / Grassy Narrows – Drive-in, 4 TCs; and, Fort Hope – Fly-in, 2 TCs)
A goal of both Projects (Journey and Canada), from a community perspective, is to recruit and retain effective teachers for permanent positions.

TCs are under no obligation to accept offers, though these are likely to be made. This is a great opportunity to see if teaching in a remote community is a ‘good fit’ for you.

Expression of interest for any of the subsidized placements is by application to your Professional Experiences Coordinator Catherine Hannon - channon@lakeheadu.ca) cc’d to Julie Howell - (jhowell@lakeheadu.ca.)

Project Journey

Is a partnership between LU, the OPP, and the community of Pikangikum.

Last year, six TCs completed a 5-week placement in Pikangikum.

  • Three accepted permanent contracts and are now teaching in the community.
  • TCs receive free transportation to/from Pikangikum, Safe Talk training (suicide prevention), and accommodations, along with a $100 weekly food stipend from the OPP for running Saturday activities (9 am to 4 pm).
  • TCs also receive a $250 stipend from LU to support higher food expenses.
  • TCs will be responsible for any additional daily living expenses.

This initiative aims to reduce suicide and violence rates within the community.

We hope to send 6 TCs in March/April 2018.

A Thunder Bay faculty advisor and professional experiences coordinator will make one site visit, during placement, to provide support to TCs and ATs.

How to Express Your Interest For Project Journey:

Interested TCs must complete and submit the attached Project Journey proposal to Catherine Hannon - (channon@lakeheadu.ca) cc’d to Julie Howell - (jhowell@lakeheadu.ca.)

Project Canada

Is a pilot project funded by The Rideau Hall Foundation. Rideau Hall will provide free transportation and accommodations to TCs, along with Safe Talk Training.

  • TCs also receive a $250 stipend from LU to support higher food expenses.
  • There is no commitment to lead activities on weekends, and therefore, no additional weekly activity stipend.
  • TCs will be responsible for any additional daily living expenses.
  • Up to ten TCs will be offered support to enter into remote placements in any of the following three locations: Sandy Lake (4 spaces), Grassy Narrows (4 spaces) or Fort Hope (2 spaces) for the March/April 2018 placement.
