Library services available during placement

A list of additional services and resources for your placement are listed below.
You can borrow many library materials and bring them with you on your placement.  Ask library staff about the possibility of borrowing print materials for the duration of your placement (some materials excluded). 
Scan and Delivery of book excerpts and journal articles may be possible while you are on your placement. Find the book or journal title in the Library Catalogue and select the Request option on the right side. Log in with your Lakehead username and password, and from the list of options, choose Request an excerpt or journal article, then on the next page, fill in the blanks on the form.  More information may be found in the library FAQs.

Library Guides are available on many Education related topics and are available on the Education Library website.   A list of these guides is listed below:


Access to Online K-12 Lesson Planning & EBook Databases:
While you are on your placement, you have access to many online databases with teaching activities, ebooks, reproducible pages and lesson plans as well as access to OSAPAC software and websites.  
To access these databases, start at the Education Library website  library.lakeheadu.ca/education , and click on “Education Databases” .  A selection of these databases is listed below.  If you are off campus and are asked for a username and password,  enter your LU email username and password (unless otherwise indicated). 
Note that some databases and software (ie OSAPAC) require a login that is not your LU email username and password.   This username/password information is available in a  mycourselink course site named:  "Fac Ed/Library E-Tools for Teaching"  which is available to every Lakehead University Faculty of Education student.  If you do not see this course in your course listing please contact the Education Library.    
AtoZ Maps Online  Database of proprietary, royalty-free world, continent, country, and state maps. Included in the 4,000+ maps are: political maps, physical maps, outline maps, population maps, precipitation maps, climate maps, and other thematic maps. New maps are added to the collection every month.

BookFlix (Children's Ebooks)  Scholastic BookFlix is an ebook database that matches children's ebook stories with related nonfiction/informational eBooks. **NEW Britannica eBook K-12 Collection   This K-12 ebook database provides access to 1,400 Britannica book titles from 40 popular Britannica series/collections. This database can be searched by keyword, grade and reading levels. It covers 39 specific subjects that are included in Kindergarten to Grade 12 curriculum from the areas of science, social studies, and language arts.
**New Crabtree Digital    Access Crabtree books through this online portal. Crabtree Publishing, and Bobbie Kalman, are well-known for their beautifully illustrated books and educational resources on K-9+ curriculum subjects including animals, countries, life and physical sciences, geography, biographies and more. Newer collections include colourfully illustrated books on Mathematics, Makerspaces, Engineering, Explorers and Sports heroes.

Curriculum Resource Center An electronic library of printable teacher-handout material for the middle, high school, and junior college curriculum.

Green Teacher Webinar Series Click on Webinars, select Past Webinars, Click here to access the webinar archive for subscribers. (A password is required to login, please check your D2L course listings for this course, "Fac Ed/Library E-Tools for Teaching" or contact the Education Library Circulation Desk 343-8718). After you enter the password, you should be directed into a page of "Protected Webinar Subscriber Archive".

International Children's Digital Library (Children's Ebooks) Provides free access to high-quality children’s books from around the world in different languages, including Arabic, Afrikaans, Danish, English, Farsi and beyond.

NAXOS Music Library Comprehensive Music Collection with access to CDs and tracks of music and other information. 500+ new CDs are added to the library every month. OERB: Ontario Educational Resources Bank Ontario Ministry of Education database. You may search for resources by grade, subject/course, strand, overall expectations, and/or keywords. Videoclips are included in this database. (A password is required to login, please check your D2L course listings for this course, "Fac Ed/Library E-Tools for Teaching" or contact the Education Library Circulation Desk 343-8718).

Open Culture: The best free cultural & educational media on the web This collection provides a list of free educational resources for K-12 students (kindergarten through high school students) and their parents and teachers. It features free video lessons/tutorials; free mobile apps; free audiobooks, ebooks and textbooks; quality YouTube channels; free foreign language lessons; test prep materials; and free web resources in academic subjects like literature, history, science and computing. This newly-released list is a work in progress.

OPHEA (Ontario Physical and Health Education Association) Elementary Curriculum Online Resources These online resources, support the implementation of Ontario’s H&PE Curriculum for Grades 1-8 by providing access to downloadable and searchable lesson plans addressing Ontario H&PE Curriculum expectations; access to student materials, planning schedules and writable assessment tools and links to supplemental resources. Click the "Click to Access the HP&E Resources" button on the BOTTOM RIGHT SIDE OF PAGE to access this database.

OPHEA Safety Guidelines Link directly to the Ontario Physical Education Safety Guidelines. No password required

TumblebookCloud (Ebooks for Middle & High School) A collection of videos and chapter books in categories which include: Ebooks, Read-Alongs, Graphic Novels, Videos (from National Geographic!), and Audio Books suitable for middle school and high school grades. Lesson plans and quizzes accompany the books.

Tumblebook Library (Children's Ebooks) A collection of electronic animated, talking picture books with fiction, non-fiction and foreign language titles for children. The Tumblebook collection includes read alongs (chapter books) ebooks, puzzles and games and TumbleResources for teachers and students.
