Applying For a General Alternative Placement or an International Alternative Placement in 2018-2019

Good Afternoon 1 YEAR B.ED & YEAR 2 (OF 2 YEAR B.ED) Students,

Are you interested in an Alternative Placement in 2018-2019?
Please read the below, carefully.

GENERAL ALTERNATIVE PLACEMENTS:

There are different types of General Alternative Placement options: 

ONLY AVAILABLE TO YEAR 2 STUDENTS (in Placement 4)

• There are traditional and non-traditional settings
• Locations in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba or Alberta 
• Link to general alternative placement google drive folder (1-page description for each site, some offer incentives) 
• You must select from list of ‘approved’ sites

When you submitted your placement preferences for YEAR 2's placements (placements 3 and 4), you indicated an interest in an Alternative Placement for Placement 4 - to occur in March/April 2019.

INTERNATIONAL ALTERNATIVE PLACEMENTS:
There are also International Alternative Placement options:
AVAILABLE TO BOTH LEGACY 1 YEAR B.ED STUDENTS & TO YEAR 2 STUDENTS 

1 YEAR B.Ed students

• This opportunity does not count as 1 of your 2 required placements (totaling 50 days) in PRI/JR divisions.
• This is an additional placement opportunity outside of the 50 day requirement for practice teaching to earn your B.Ed degree and will occur in May 2019 (3 weeks)
• Placement Dates: May 6-24th, 2019

YEAR 2 (of 2 Year B.Ed) students 

• This opportunity does count as 1 of your 4 required placements (totaling 105 days) in PRI/JR divisions.
• This placement opportunity is a part of the 105 day requirement for practice teaching to earn your B.Ed degree and will occur in March/April 2019 (5 weeks)
• Placement Dates: March 25th - April 26th, 2019

You will outline your specific preference for a Remote/Alternate Placement, when you will complete and submit either the:

General Alternative Placement Application Form: (LIMITED TO YEAR 2 STUDENTS ONLY)

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

Some alternative/international placements have added costs:

•         Transportation (to/from region; to/from school or site)

•         Accommodation

•         Other living expenses such as food (higher in some areas)

•         Unexpected fees (for international/ out of province travel)

•         Medical insurance (inter-provincial and international)

•         Vaccinations (international)

•         Passport  (international)

•         Visa fees (international)

Tips to remember when preparing your General Alternative Placement Application: 

• Be sure to list top 3 choices
• Be as specific as possible
• Submit YEAR 1 (Placements 1 and 2) summative evaluations with application
• Do NOT contact sites  (The Faculty of Education will do that)

Tips to remember when preparing your International Alternative Placement Application:

• Be sure to include your resume
• Your summative evaluations for any completed placements will be reviewed, when considering your application

Application Submission Instructions:

Whether you are submitting a General Alternative Placement Application or an International Alternative Placement Application, you should be sure to send your package to the correct contact person.

For Example:

• All completed General Alternative Placement Application Packages should be emailed to Laura Morgan (lmorgan@lakeheadu.ca) by Monday Sept 24, 2018 at 4:00pm
